Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq:EQIX), a provider of global data center services,
today announced the expansion of its second International Business
Exchange (IBX) data center, TY2, in Tokyo. The growth in this market
is a result of strong demand for data center services from cloud and IT
service providers, content companies and financial firms doing business
in Japan. The $9 million, 140 cabinet equivalents expansion is scheduled
for completion in Q4 2010 and will extend total capacity in Tokyo to
1,600 cabinet equivalents.
“The TY2 IBX expansion demonstrates Equinixs commitment
to this strategic market and our ability to quickly add customer-driven
capacity to our global platform.”
Equinix operates two IBX data centers in Tokyo, TY1 and TY2, that are
directly connected to each other by fiber. The companys
carrier-neutral, global platform includes more than 50 international and
domestic carriers and networks in Tokyo. In addition, the top three
Internet exchanges in Japan, including Equinix Exchange, are present
within the Equinix Tokyo IBX data centers.
With its operational availability and secure infrastructure, Equinix was
selected by Tokyo Financial Exchanges Inc. (TFX) and Tokyo Commodity
Exchange (TOCOM) as the preferred data center colocation provider. In
addition to network choice, Equinix offers the ability to connect
directly to strategic business partners, creating value through
increased performance and reducing cost.
We have operated in Japan for almost 10 years, and both local and
multinational corporations trust us to optimize their network
performance and expand global reach, said Steve Smith, president and
CEO of Equinix. The TY2 IBX expansion demonstrates Equinixs commitment
to this strategic market and our ability to quickly add customer-driven
capacity to our global platform.
In Japan, corporations trust Equinix to deliver operational excellence
and optimize the performance of their business, said Kei Furuta,
managing director, Equinix Japan K.K. Our Tokyo expansion validates the
growing demand for Equinix by companies that need to increase their
presence in this important market.
Todays announcement is part of Equinixs expansion strategy in
Asia-Pacific. Equinix recently announced the expansion of its SY3 data
center in Sydney, the third phase expansion of its SG2 center in
Singapore, and a second IBX in Hong Kong (HK2).
