Todays jobs report shows no real improvement for workers in the
construction industry, a key driver of our economy. The industrys
unemployment rate stood at 17 percent in August, with 1.5 million
construction workers looking for a job.
Terry OSullivan, General President of LIUNA, made the following
statement:
We can create millions of good jobs by investing in the basics of
America our transportation systems, water resources, school facilities
and energy systems. The need is dire with our nation losing competitive
ground in the global economy and with 1.5 million workers ready, willing
and able to go to work building America.
A crucial start is passage of a long overdue Surface Transportation
Bill, which has the potential to create 8.3 million jobs, many in the
construction industry, according to the American Association of State
Highway and Transportation Officials. Likewise, according to AASHTO,
failure to invest in transportation fully through a new Surface
Transportation Bill will result in the loss of 2 million jobs.
This is a no brainer: We can put men and women back to work, improve our
economy and our competitive standing the world and leave behind real
assets for taxpayers and future generations.

powerhouse of workers who are proud to build America
